Step motors are a popular solution for motion applications that benefit from low cost and brushless (externally phased) operation. Step motors traditionally use an open loop microstepping control scheme, but the more advanced control technique called closed loop stepper is increasingly being used in its place. Closed loop steppers are now finding adoption in a range of cost sensitive industrial applications such as textile machinery, coil winding, circuit board production, and pick and place machines where high rates of acceleration are critical.
The Magellan MC58000 and MC55000 Motion Control ICs provide advanced motion control for medical, scientific, automation, industrial, and robotic applications. Available in 1, 2, 3, and 4-axis versions, these flexible, programmable devices control Brushless DC, DC Brush, and step motors. These motion control ICs are driven by a host using either a parallel bus, SPI, CANbus 2.0B, or RS232/485 serial. They deliver user selectable profiling modes, including S-curve, trapezoidal, velocity contouring and electronic gearing. PID servo loop compensation utilizes a 32-bit position error and includes velocity and acceleration feedforward. High performance FOC provides high accuracy, ultra-low noise motor operation.
Replay the on-demand webinar of our popular paper. In this webinar, Chuck Lewin, PMD CEO, talks about servo actuators that function as end effectors, often mounted on transport systems such as robotics arms and gantries. These devices include linear actuators, force feedback actuators, voice coils, and more. Understanding their capabilities and properties will help you ensure that your next application delivers the goods without dropping the ball!
Principles of Motor Selection
Once the decision is made to use an electric motor in a new machine design the next big challenge is selecting the right motor and sizing it correctly for the application at hand. This article will give you all the tools you need to answer this challenge - showing the different types of motors that are available and explaining key concepts such as torque curves, motor winding configurations, inertia matching, and more.
