Positioning IC Applications, Peristaltic Pump Control, and More

The May 2025 edition of Motion Control News includes the most recent PMD news, resources, and announcements.

In this edition of Motion Control News:

  • PMD Positioning Motion Control ICs
This guide compiles PMD positioning motion control IC application examples for BLDC, DC Brush, and step motors. High level control flow diagrams allow users to quickly choose and adapt an approach. Each description provides feedback and communication options along with other useful application information. The Magellan® family of ICs represent PMD’s state of the art positioning motion control ICs. These ICs are provided in both a single axis configuration (MC58113 family ICs) and multi-axis configuration (MC58000 family ICs).

  • Peristaltic Pump Control
Peristaltic pump control means controlling the special mechanical characteristics of this type of pump as it rotates. Peristaltic pumps are used in a broad range of industrial and medical applications but are probably best known in patient treatment applications where bodily fluid such as blood is continuously drawn, processed, and returned to a patient. Because of the dramatic changes in reflected load as the pump rotates, peristaltic pump control presents unique challenges to minimize pressure fluctuations and pulsing in the amount of delivered fluid.
  • Feedforward in Motion Control
Feedforward is a powerful motion control technology for the all-important task of improving positioning accuracy. In this article we will introduce traditional control approaches such as acceleration feedforward, but also show how table-driven feedforward techniques can correct for mechanical linkage compliance and motor torque fluctuations in both servo and stepper-based systems.
